Symptoms
When you do an incremental backup of a drive with "Windows data deduplication" enabled, certain issues may arise.
1) Performing an incremental backup of both the C drive and a Windows data deduplication drive together may cause the Windows data deduplication drive to become RAW.
2) Performing an incremental backup solely for a Windows data deduplication drive may result in certain cases where the file does not exist in the backup image.
Cause
The $AIPMAP file, which holds tracking information for the tracking driver, undergoes deduplication. This can lead to tracking information being written to the wrong location and causing file system corruption.
Workaround
Avoid incremental backup for a drive with Windows data deduplication enabled. Full backup does not corrupt the file system. The issue was fixed in AIP2018 SP1M1 or later. In Windows Server 2012, a known bug causes it to become RAW—refer to this article for more information.
