Summary
In RHEL 7.4/CentOS 7.4 or earlier, when installing and restarting the latest package needed for the GUI through the Internet, a message is shown, and the GNOME desktop environment fails to start.
“Oh no! Something has gone wrong.”
Cause
This issue arises when the package on which mesa-libGL depends is updated in RHEL 7.4/CentOS 7.4. Additionally, installing mesa-libGL on RHEL 7.5/CentOS 7.5 causes login issues in the GNOME Desktop. It's a problem related to the package.
When running yum via the Internet, use RHEL7.6/CentOS7.6 or later.
If using RHEL 7.5/CentOS 7.5 or earlier, install the package from the OS installation media. If you've installed individual packages online, you might face errors related to "Protected multilib versions," which need to be resolved individually.
Workaround 1
Install and use the RHEL7.6/CentOS7.6 or later.
Workaround 2
If “Oh no!” is displayed, follow these steps:
1) Press the logout button.
2) Switch the console with Alt + F2.
3) Execute the command:
- # yum update
4) Reboot the OS.
