Behavior of Windows Volume Shadow Copy service

Summary

Hot Backup of Windows system uses Snapshot of Volume Shadow Copy service (hereinafter "VSS"). Therefore, if VSS process does not normally behave, AIP's Backup feature does not normally operate. When VSS process fails in error for some reason, AIP backup task also fails in error and ends with Exit Code [-311].

The following are the main reasons why VSS process fails.

1) No sufficient available space in volume.
When running VSS, the backup source volume has to have 10% or more of available space.

2) Highly loaded disk
When the backup source volume (disk) is loaded too high to create a snapshot or the snapshot, if taken, cannot be saved, VSS process fails in error and backup task fails.

3)Insufficient memory
Due to insufficient memory or resources, VSS process cannot be performed. As a result, VSS error is caused and backup task fails.
