The following is an example of our backup schedule and retention policy. Use this as a reference when setting up your schedule.
For example, the following schedule settings are configured and the retention policy option is enabled.
Schedule
Base Sunday 00:00 Create an Incremental backup every Sunday.
Incremental Monday - Saturday 00:40 Create an incremental backup every day of a week.
Event Backup Enabled The backup task starts when Windows shuts down or restarts.
Enable the [Shutdown] option for event-triggered backup
https://actiphyhelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/13451319238681-Enable-the-Shutdown-option-for-event-triggered-backup
When you enable the [Shutdown / Reboot] option for event-triggered backups, backups start during system shutdown, restart, or at the specified time/day. If no base backup exists at the destination, the first incremental backup creates one, and subsequent backups follow the predefined settings.
Retention Policy Enabled
Number of generations of backup image files to retain:1
Delete the older image before new base backup: Disabled
When the Retention Policy is enabled, the oldest image set (base backup + incremental backups) is automatically deleted before a new one is created, once the predefined limit is reached. However, if only event-triggered or recurring incremental backups are set, the Retention Policy won't automatically delete outdated backups.
When you run a base or incremental backup manually or via the command line using the same schedule, the backup task follows the Retention Policy.
For example, with the above settings, the backup schedule works as follows:
1) The first backup creates a base backup unless one was manually created. If the base backup is manually set, subsequent backups follow the predefined schedule. If not, the first backup will create a base backup, even if an incremental backup is scheduled.
2) After the base backup, incremental backups are created based on the Event Backup setting and the incremental schedule.
3) If a full backup is scheduled for every Sunday, the second full backup will be created unless another full backup was scheduled. To keep only the second base backup, disable the [Delete the older image before new base backup] option in [Policy Setting 1]. This will delete incremental backups created after the first base backup.
If there isn’t enough space, enabling [Delete the older image before new base backup] will help free up space by removing the previous backups before creating the new base backup. However, if a base backup fails, no backup files might remain. For safety, it’s recommended to select "2" for the Retention Policy.
After this, backups will continue as per the scheduled settings.
