Because backup files aren’t deleted automatically, full and incremental backups will keep adding up. To delete old backups automatically or keep a set number of backups, use the Retention Policy.
When Retention Policy is enabled, backup sets are counted using these rules:
The first full backup is the "1st generation," including all incremental backups made before the second full backup.
The second full backup is the "2nd generation," including all incremental backups made before the third full backup. Later generations are counted the same way.
If you set up one full backup followed by recurring incremental backups, no new full backups are created, generations don’t increase, and old backups won’t be deleted by the Retention Policy.
