Linux-based boot environment may fail to start after a Windows Update, showing the following message:
Verifying shim SBAT data failed: Security Policy Violation
Something has gone seriously wrong: SBAT self-check failed: Security Policy Violation
Conditions
- PC is running Windows 10 or later, or Windows Server 2016 or later.
- Secure Boot is enabled on the target PC.
- June 2025 Windows Update is installed.
- A Linux-based boot environment (version 7.0.0.8661 to 7.5.0.9448 with Secure Boot support) is used.
Cause
The issue appears to be caused by enhanced security from the Windows Update.
Workaround
Workarounds (choose one):
- Use the Boot Environment Builder to create a Windows-based boot environment (recommended).
- Temporarily disable Secure Boot in the PC’s BIOS/UEFI settings (for details, contact the PC manufacturer).
We plan to fix this in future boot media, but similar issues may occur with future Windows Updates. If the problem happens again, please use one of the above workarounds.
