Summary
Earlier AIP BE Builder versions were CentOS 7.x/8.x-based. Due to uncertain future release plans for CentOS, AIP2022 BE Builder now creates a Linux-based boot environment using Debian. This OS change brings the following improvements.
- Complete on-memory boot
- Reduced ISO-file size
Complete on-memory boot
CentOS-based boot environments had issues with on-memory boot, such as system hang-ups when ejecting DVD media after booting. Debian-based boot environments now allow flawless on-memory boot. After booting, you can eject DVD media and continue operations without any issues.
Reduced ISO-file size
The ISO file size of CentOS-based boot environments grew by 50-80MB per minor version. For instance, CentOS 7.4 is 1.06GB, and CentOS 8.3 is 1.24GB, mainly due to more dependent packages and embedded packages. Debian-based boot environments use the user-friendly GNOME desktop with minimal configuration, resulting in a smaller ISO file size of 981MB.
