Details
Under the following conditions, the first incremental backup does not run after the settings are changed. The reconcile task also does not run. Once the base (full) backup is completed, the incremental backup schedule resumes normally.
Common to agent-based and agentless backups:
- If no backup image exists in the backup destination, the first scheduled incremental backup creates a full backup. All future backups then run according to the schedule.
Agent-based
A new base (full) backup is required in the following cases:
- The compression setting changes (Deduplication Compression or Compression), if the setting was editable in a previous version.
- Upgrading:
- From ActiveImage Protector 2.x to 3.x
- From 3.0/3.1 to 3.5
- Between versions of 3.5
- From 2018 to 2022 or later
- The ActiveImage Protector upgrade changes the image format (see Related Articles).
- The backup source changes.
- The backup source disk or volume is resized (expanded or reduced).
- The Linux operating system is restarted (Linux Edition only).
Agentless (HyperBack)
A new base (full) backup is required in the following cases:
- Upgrading from ActiveImage Protector 2018 to 2022 or later.
- The backup source changes (for example, if a selected virtual disk is disconnected). The first backup after recovery will be a full backup.
- The size of a dynamically expanding VHD/VHDX or thin-provisioned VMDK changes, even if the volume size inside the disk does not.
- The ActiveImage Protector upgrade changes the image format (see Related Articles).
- For Hyper-V guests using RCT, deleting the .mrt and .rct files prevents incremental backups from running and causes Error -603 until the next full backup. Run a full backup manually or wait for the next scheduled full backup.
Notes
- The Reconcile feature was introduced in ActiveImage Protector 3.1 (Windows Edition). It was discontinued in ActiveImage Protector 2018 Update 7 when change tracking switched from Tracking Driver mode to CBC mode.
- Starting with ActiveImage Protector Windows Edition 7.0.0.8643, you can choose either Tracking Driver mode or CBC mode. Reconcile is available only with Tracking Driver mode.
- Deduplication Compression was introduced in ActiveImage Protector 3.5.
