Summary
When backing up a Microsoft BitLocker-encrypted device, be aware of limitations based on the chosen backup feature.
Hot Backup
- Backup using Smart Sector technology is supported.
- BootCheck can be enabled for this backup.
- Restoring from this backup file disables BitLocker encryption for the restored device.
* This occurs because of the design of the Volume Shadow Copy service in Microsoft Windows.
Cold Backup
- Only full-sector backup supports encrypted device.
- BootCheck can be performed on the created backup image, but encryption may fail with an error.
- IT Pro only supports full backup, and the Backup Type setting window is not shown. Restoring from this backup enables BitLocker encryption on the restored device.
- If you use the restored system disk on a different computer than the backup source, you'll be prompted to enter the restore key. The copy operation has similar limitations; copying a BitLocker-encrypted device in the boot environment enables BitLocker on the copied device.
