When backing up a Microsoft BitLocker encrypted device, the following limitations are applied depending on the backup method.
Hot Backup
- SmartSector backup is supported.
- BootCheck supports SmartSector backup.
- When restoring a backup created by SmartSector backup, BitLocker encryption of the restored device is disabled.
* This behavior happens because of how Microsoft Windows is designed, specifically in the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service.
Cold Backup
- Only full-sector backup supports encrypted device.
- BootCheck can be run on a full backup of an encrypted device, but it fails with an error.
- IT Pro doesn't offer the option to select backup types; it only supports full backups. Restoring a backup created with IT Pro enables BitLocker encryption on the restored device.
- If you try to boot the restored system disk on a different computer than the one where the backup was made, you'll need to enter the recovery key.
* The same restrictions apply to copying operations too. When you copy a BitLocker encrypted device in a boot environment, the copied device also becomes BitLocker encrypted. - IT Pro and DeployUSB cold backup don't allow incremental backups using BitLocker encrypted full backup files.
